Center of IL | First, if your going to feed 20+ calves, they need to be separated, or every problem will sweep through every calf. Hutches, crates, pens, whatever, they need to be separate. Second, you need electrolytes, meds, med tools, available instantly. If a calf gets sick, you need to deal with it NOW, not tomorrow. Third, Vaccinate. Fourth, find a good vet but you probably can't afford him. The best book I had, was by Keith Jeffers of Jeffers Vet Supply. A lot of good info but let me warn you, you still need the gift of cattle husbandry. Become friends with a person who raised a lot of veal calves or veal calf publications are helpful too. Plan on living with the calves for a month and even then, I would say, I lost more calves after weaning off milk. Fifth, you absolutely must be able to put a tube down a calf's throat when he stops sucking and feed him this way. If you can't, count on major calf loss. Learning how to give an IV is very helpful too. Good Luck ! | |
