nw iowa
hot water heaters use diesel fuel-expensive-and the main complaint we have heard is the hot water coil that makes the water hot always leaks sooner or later.if you can, stay away from hot water heaters.we have murphy barns which are designed to be soaked like iowamark says.they have 2 types of soakers, one double one over the concrete apron that sprays two small streams of water onto the floor.they also have 360 degree spinners over the slats that are also used for cooling in summer.even if you only have a yard type sprinkler or a hose used at the proper time, that will help.the key is to soak the manure while you have pigs in the pen to help work it down thru the slats also.we have been told by neighbors, who have tunnel barns that they have to scrape thick chunks of manure off the slats and then have even had to take the curtains down and throw the big chunks into a manure spreader.if i ever have to do that i'll quit raising hogs first.we use two cold water alladin washers.10 hp electric motor,4gph,300psi ,if memory serves.
