If you're mindless, that make two of us! I totally agree with your statement on the color of cattle. The color that really counts is the color with hide off! Where I live, Black Angus cattle dominate the country side. Even the Simmental's are black!
I learned a long time ago that there is more variation within a breed then between breeds and functional cattle with good disposition can be found in all breeds( even those Angus cattle!). Everyone put selection pressure on breeding depending on their management practice. I raised Polled Hereford cows and AI'd Red Angus sires on small acreage in Western Washington for 35 years. and it was a piece of cake. Never lost a calf and had one pull. I came to Montana and bought some local cattle to get started and never saw so many poorly functioning cattle; calf killers, poor mothers , high headed, owly cattle. lost calves ,etc. The selection pressure here appears to be to maximize weaning weight for the most part.
