In this discussion of calving season length I am not pushing Herefords nor minimizing the effects of heterosis. I am saying there are MANY factors that affect the length of the calving season. Dave brings up a good example and  possible factor also.

I guess this discussion got headed in a different direction than I intended. I wasn't criticizing the purebreds for not calving sooner. Looking at my records, my first calf hit the ground on March 18th. It's now April 8th. Had another calf today, (black baldy heifer out of a registered Hereford cow) and I'm pretty sure I'll have at least 2 more tonight. I turned the bull in on June 16th last summer, when he was about 15 months old. I turned him out a couple of weeks early since he was young and I thought it may take a few tries before he caught on, but judging from when the calves started coming he figured it out pretty fast!
