south central IOWA | We were talking about the dry summer/no grass thing the other day when doing some numbers on backgrounding calves in a dry lot. What's it take for a cow to maintain the same conditioning as she would on a good grass year, 4 or 5 lbs of grain/day? With the mix we've been feeding at roughly $200/ton, do the math. It would be cheaper than feeding hay. The only problem would be manpower and bunks. | |
