Says most any expert on dairy calf nutrition. Calves have a very small rumen and feeding hay fills that rumen up quickly and passes slowly thereby leaving less available space for grain. There is more TDN in grain than hay so by feeding hay you are essentially lower the level of nutrition to the calf.
