Subject: RE: Dairy calf steers

We started raising holstein steers up to 350-400 pounds this past year. We feed milk replacer for 5-6 weeks. Keep it to 1 bag or less of milk replacer/calf. Start feeding grain mix after a couple days. Don't feed them hay until they are eating grain well. After they are weaned and out of the hutches, we feed them rolled corn and commercial mix with grass last summer and hay this winter. My father-in-law has been raising feeders for several years and found they did not grow as fast when calves if they got free choice hay before learning to eat grain well.
