Subject: Herefords should be cheap

Good blacks in ND/SD are bringing $1,300 and some even higher.  I raise my own replacements so I don't go to cow sales.  Just basing it on what my neighbor paid last week and what I see in the papers.

As to Herefords, I know when we sold our calves a couple weeks ago, I saw a few Hereford calves come through the ring and they easily brought 20 cents a pound less then black or red Angus.   We had Herefords until 20 years ago and calves gain slower (that's why feedlots pay less for them), plus pink eye trouble, and I did wind up with a polled Hereford dwarf and remember the days when the dwarfs were common among some Hereford bloodlines.

IMO Herefords should be avoided.  If you really have your heart set on them, I'd say you should be able to find some for $900.
