Central Minnesota
I have spent a lot of time walking our corn fields in the past month. Fun to watch the development of the cob. Crop looks good here but do have less rolls and smaller kernals. Hoping for good test weights as the rain keeps coming and we are just at black layer--appox 30-32%. on 98 day corn. Will it be a record crop in our area--not sure--starting to see some fields with plants dieing from the top down and to much variable soil types and we have been in a wet cycle with rain every 3 to 5 days. Soils are saturated. Concern is now turning to another wet harvert which brings other plant issues, expecting stalk rot to be a problem and possible pre harvest losses. Let USDA play with the numbers. Most of the 2010 crop has been priced at above breakeven. Now is the time to begin focusing on marketing the 2011 crop at possible higher levels if this years corn yields continue to drop. Forget the home run in pricing--just get a great average.
