I think basically any JD 5000 chopper is a decent machine. we run a 5440 for ground ear corn and 4 row silage. This machine is smaller than 5400. If you are serious about machine I would take someone along that really knows these choppers! our hydro drive wore out at 38-4000 hrs. but we do pull 125 chuck wagons with top for GEC. We run synthetic oil in main gearbox, this really helped keep temps down. The neighbor sold a 5460 at auction with newer cutterdrum assm. for 12,000 a couple years ago and choppers are cheaper now due to distillers by products being used around here. Good luck!
