Thanks for all the responses. My grandpa says he never had one go through in 50 years, but due to lack of paying attention/management, he probably did and never knew it. I think I'm going to put a section of cattle or hog panel over it, only wired at the top. That way it'll hang down over the opening but will still flex at the bottom to let a lot of water through in the event of a gully washer.
