I agree with the kids getting attached. My kids never but my wife who is a city girl, well boy did we have a time with that. We usually feed 5 to 10 pigs and butcher for ourselves and family. Well my kids knew we were going to eat them and they understand were our hamburger comes from but the first time my wife was around for butchering she wouldn't talk to me for a week. I still get in trouble if she finds out i butchered a tame steer. Oh well it sure tastes good.
