Subject: RE: Raising ones own meat?

Had all of that stuff here when I was a kid. Hogs, chickens, milk cows, and sheep. Now that I'm by myself I can buy what eggs and milk I use at the store cheaper than I could keep chickens and a milk cow around. Not to mention less aggravation and chores. I certainly don't miss having chickens or hogs around but I do miss my sheep at times.

I do have my own beef custom processed and share it with my sister who lives in town. Probably not much cheaper than buying it at the store but I know what I'm getting. Quality is a hit and miss thing buying meat at the store.

Don't get me wrong, I think having animal chores to do is a great thing for kids to learn about animal husbandry and teach them responsibilty. If I had kids that would be good reason to have a milk cow and chickens. But as an adult I try to streamline my operation to avoid daily chores altogether if I can. I don't even have a dog any more. If I have to be gone for a few days, I can put out extra cat food and the cats are fine.
