To me, if you work outdoors, a hat's a tool like a knife or cell phone on your belt. It becomes second nature and you don't think to take it off unless you come home. You take your hat off when your boots come off. Any place fit for workboots is fit for a hat. If I'm eating out in a place I'm still wearing my workboots, well, guess what? Most likely my hat's still on.
I moved and knew one new neighbour for probably 6-8 years before I found out he was bald. It was at a funeral and I hardly recognized him.
