As MT said, the card is much easier to use. I have one computer with a built in card reader on the front. I have seen them on sale for under $20 and that is the way to go. Pop the card in and treat it like another drive. Create a folder just for photos and copy everything into it as a catch all bin. Then copy them into more organized folders. When you say to yourself "I know I took a picture of the combine last fall picking corn" it is a lot easier to find if you spend a bit of time organizing. Before you go to the pawn shop take a little time to check out camera prices in a store. It can be like buying log chains at a farm auction. You can sometimes buy new cheaper. I have a cheaper Kodak. It just gives me fits because the shutter speed is too slow and I can't get the exposure right with the flash. I just cannot get candid shots to work with it. Here is an example:
