The tip may not be part of the actual meal cost, but the OP was comparing dine-in lunch to carry-out.
You’re right, it’s a hard comparison to make. Are we comparing the cost of the food, or the cost of the meal experience?
IMO the tip isn’t really part of the cost of the meal, it’s what you pay for the extras you get vs a non-tipping establishment. A ceramic plate, a metal fork, water you don’t have to ask for or fill yourself, and someone to take care of all that are beyond what you get at fast food, and you pay beyond the food cost accordingly.
So when my son and I went out to lunch, the food was indeed under $10 per plate, even if the out of pocket cost was a little over $10 per plate. They provided more than just food.
