A trucker friend of mine described what would happen when he hauled things like apples. He would have to call the warehouse 24 hours ahead of time. They would then "ripen" the apples for him the next day. They would be ripened by exposing them to a gas ( I think ethylene oxide) for a period of time. That was stuff that was shipped from Peru and obviously picked when green. A good reason for the taste to be bad.
