NW Washington | I have noticed problems with apples in the local supermarket the longer we get from apple picking time. I am a fan of Pink Lady or Cripps Pink apples, and I find bad ones in the store, too.
For apples to last in storage, they need to be kept in a controlled atmosphere and at a cool temperature, but once they are shipped to stores, who knows what kind of storage the apples are kept in? They can also lay out on display at room temperature for a long time.
Another factor is that some apple varieties store better than others and I have no idea where Honeycrisp and Pink Ladies are on that scale.
Maybe complaining to the store produce manager or the store manager would help.
