A question people should ask themselves is if they had a cow that lost its calf, would they buy a $800 calf to graft onto that cow? My guess is most people wouldn't, but I'm a dairy guy.

I have a feeling the market is going to stay strong due to lack of replacements and a thinner dairy herd.

You also are probably going to keep the cow, how much more is she going to eat to make the milk for the calf? I'm guessing it's minimal, so feeding it to 400 lbs might be smart. Heavier than that the time/price issue kicks in more.
