Studies done by universities over 50 years ago showed that cultivation increased yields. Both by reducing weeds and aerating the soil. Also studies done in the past showed that you had less buildup of fertilizer and nutrients on the top of soil which resulted in less fertilizer run off into the streams. So cultivation pays on some fields.
