Thumb of Michigan | We had very similar results over a 2 or 3 year period, Luke. Forget the cost to cultivate and the time it took, still losing dollars to cultivate corn.
We were possibly seeing little benefit due to side dressing ammonia at the time, though. Sealing wasn't generally too big a problem, but I know we could have trouble with that as well. Started putting plow coulters on the applicator, and that kind of helped enough.
Our issue back in those days also was so many crops that we were row cultivating, and lack of people with the time or the patience to run a cultivator. I happened to enjoy it, but that grew old after cultivating stuff for 3 months in a row. We did have a hired man who was very good at cultivating and enjoyed it. My Dad would rather do anything else beside run one. Getting corn out of the picture meant we were able to be timelier on higher value crops that gained more from cultivators.
Only ones cultivating in my 'hood now are the organic guys. | |
