I have never seen a 40d nail used as anything other than a tent stake...

When you look at framing all studs and shear walls are nailed with no screws allowed. Small deck/drywall/general purpose screws are very hard and will fail in shear when the clamping force is overcome. Nails are different and will not fail until a much higher shear load.

When you move to larger connections modern connectors (I use Simpson sds family of screws) they are engineered to take a shear load. I have used these to failure in non critical situations and they have always torn and bent. I really like these screws and use them regularly. Every structural engineer I have worked with likes them as well
