I think screws may be stronger due to clamping force friction between 2 pieces of wood. But every time I use screws in wood when the screw exits the first piece it does not enter the second piece immediately so there is a gap between the 2. The only way to overcome this is use a C clamp or drill a hole in the first board. I still use both, depends on the application.

Easy solution to this. After screw enters second piece, back it out and run it back in.
