What do you have for a stand? I had a field where the orchardgrass winterkilled and the alfalfa was very thin. Used soft rock phosphate and Ammonium phosphate fertilizer on it. I had 3 nice cuttings as long as you did not look at how long the stems coming off the crowns were after cutting. I had as many as 27 stems coming off the crowns. Apparently the alfalfa really liked that fertilizer. I had also drilled oats in early spring to give it some more yield, but the fertilizer response was huge. Unbelievable for a stand so thin you could put your foot down just about anywhere and not be on a crown.
