WAS is the proper word for timothy being used around here. Orchardgrass doesn't like drought, but I've been most successful getting it added to a thinning alfalfa stand. Fescue if an improved variety makes almost as good of hay and is more rugged. Neither one will make much the first year. Italian ryegrass will make more tonnage the year it is seeded, but won't persist.

Personally I'd drill a mix of fescue and Italian ryegrass if it has to stay in hay.
