Subject: RE: Henderson tool = abscesses

Nebraska
I’ve encountered far more problems in banded steers than knife and spun steers…. And it’s not even close. Tetanus, infected cords, the hole left from the scrotum falling off that doesn’t close, and above all the belly nuts because the guy didn’t care to count to two. Have we had some issues in knife cuts, yes but far less and it was because we messed up and weren’t clean enough. We knife them all here, just pull rather than spin unless they’re over about 700#. If you’re getting hair and dirt in there with the henderson, it wasn’t bad advice, just your technique needs improved. We also double check every steer that comes in and it’s the banded ones that have problems that need fixed.

Garvo and several others that buy calves try to convey the message but have a hard time getting people to understand what they’re finding when they double check those calves. The discount at auction for banded vs knife should be wider IMO, but it usually gets looked past due to other factors such as type and flesh.
