I don't see anything wrong with benefit auctions, as long as you're buying the item for its real value to you, and you aren't pressured into overpaying for the item.
Yes, they can be fine under the conditions you mentioned. I think it can be a temptation to overpay so that people talk about your generosity, but that doesn't mean you have to overpay.
I am part of the EPMC church group and we are pretty strict about not taking government money. I know not all Mennonites have this position and that is fine. Sometimes I wish we could use DMC, but our position is not use it so just have to focus on running a better farm otherwise and depend more on other income to make up for the money we lose not using DMC. |
