| Charcoal is too abrasive. It is like brushing your teeth with sand....which will damage your tooth enamel with prolonged use. A lot of the common toothpastes use silica, which is less damaging.
Whitening toothpastes will have more abrasive than their non-whitening counterparts. "whitening" toothpastes do so by polishing off some of the surface stains. The bleaching type of whitening uses either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to oxidize some of the stain pigments. OTC whitening strips have low concentrations of peroxide and are effective. The gel that you get from your dentist is a higher concentration of peroxide, but this needs to be more controlled with custom application trays to minimize tissue contact (will burn the tissue). | |
