There are no modifications to the van- the existing grab handle inside the door is all she needs. She can transfer independently from her chair to the middle seat in the van- the sliding doors and relatively low seat height make it fairly easy. She doesn't have her license(yet), but could use this van to drive. Ideally it would have permanent hand controls, but they do have semi-permanent hand controls that can be installed and removed in minutes. I know of people who prefer this style because it can be adapted to many vehicles. We have them and she has done some driving. Getting her license would be a good deal, but the biggest thing here will be the ability to drive independently as well. Once she transfers into the driver's seat she needs to be able to break down her wheelchair enough to lift and stow in (any) car. After she can reassemble the chair and get back in it she will have true independence. Yes- there are more 'accessible' vehicles available out there. The ideal vehicle has the least amount of adaption that still gives you everything you need. good luck -jim |
