Malta, Illinois | I saw something similar last week. I dug some corn plants to check root development and the top 1.5" to 2" was bone dry but below that where the roots were at there is plenty of moisture for a while yet. We had almost no rain in April and 3" to 5" in May depending on location. Tile were running again and have slowed to a trickle again now. That doesn't mean we are in dire straits it just means we will need some rain at some point in June. I do know there are parts of the state that are much drier with different soils than I have. We have actually been in a dry pattern for over two years now getting just enough rain at the right time to raise some extraordinary crops. We have done this with little or not subsoil moisture which is unusual for us. One of these years our luck is going to run out. | |
