Nebraska aka the boondocks | Guys that farm in the plains that have both dryland and fully irrigated obviously, or maybe not, understand the difference between field with yield potential of 270 and 150, and they could be side by side. There are primo irrigated pivots right beside dryland fields. What is the relevance of this? Out here, we soil probe ground for moisture every week, calculate et rates etc. we k ow full well bow dry it is, simply because you irrigate accordingly. The dryland ground here has very little soil moisture capacity. If ground can hold 5 inches in the root zone, only 2.5 is available to the plant, with et rates over .4 in arid years it doesn’t last long. I have been amazed over the years, all the talk of dry, and the empirical data simply isn’t there, because unless you are irrigating , nobody keeps track.
