We usually do it the winter before, but what we do is halter them and let them drag the rope for a couple days. Then we catch them and tie them in the shed and then feed/water in a very small concrete pen right in front of the shed. They soon figure out they have to go with you to eat and drink. It's kind of a rodeo the first couple times.


+1, just use an old rope, because it's going to get muddy/crappy from dragging, but at least they learn to stop. Put a clean one on to handle them, I just throw the dirty one on top of their back.
