Adapter is a housing that lets you unscrew the hydrant and install a new one without disturbing the soil [hand digging]. It includes a 4 inch brass nipple for the hydrant to screw into-the size of the hydrant input is needed to size the brass nipple, probably 3/4 NPT. Some are larger. They also offer a quarter turn deal that lets you remove the hydrant or whatever you have coming off the horizontal line without turning the water off first, it is self closing as the hydrant is removed. They recommend using black plastic pipe for a foot or so each way for flex, they furnish the tee up from there. They don't recommend concrete floor heat pipe as the inside fittings reduce the flow by one pipe size.

Good possibility a 3 inch schedule 40 plastic pipe with some sort of seal at the top would provide much of the same results. Not as handy of course. Can buy 10 for less than $1000.00.
