Kevin,

We run a continuous flow grain dryer and usually dump it "hot" out of the dryer at 17% or less. Then it goes via an air system into our storage bins and is cooled there and will stay put until delivery time. We run our fans on it to bring it down to 14.5-15% for over winter storage. Up here in East Central Minnesota, we are typically drying into Thanksgiving and because of dumping hot and cooling the bin, our condensation turns into ice along the rings and iciciles on the ladder and roof edge. We would like to go to a dryer that we would be able to cool continuously, but we'll have to turn the piggy bank upside down for that one!

We have looked at the idea of having a separate bin to "steep" the grain after it comes out of the bin and then dump it cooler into our storage bins. A steeping bin would just give you a better feeling instead of dumping hot and worrying all winter if you got all of the heat and moisture out of the bin that you would need to. If you are dumping into a bin with full floor aeration, I wouldn't worry as bad as a bin with a trough aeration system.

Lance
