My neighbour has some lengths of chain that he "claims" were used on the docks for picking up army tanks with the big gantry cranes and loading them onto ships during WW2. They have these neat clips on each end that a chain loop fits into snugly and won't come out of if the chain goes slack. I've used them a time or two and they sure are strong. When you drop the chain in a pile the steel sure rings nice.
