School Of Hard Knock - 5/17/2009 06:54 #1, How does the grade system of chain work? GR...70 and/or 48 on the links , what does that stand for?

How about the word "transport"
Meets DOT guidelines for secureing loads transported on the road. It is not intended to be"stressed" by streaching when being used to pull something.

In terms of chain strength? Which is the strongest?
Grade 120

#2, Is the 3/8th chain sufficent in most cases for the versy? We tested a few chains here yesterday, some didnt last. From what Ive seen in the local farm store, i remember that a 3/8th ,gr 70 chain is only rated at 5900 lbs strength? When you are pulling a stuck Versy out of the mud, you have over 20,000 in just the weight of the iron. I like the chain because you throw it in the tool boxes or a 5 gallon pail and it goes with you easily. Cant do that with a cable.
For the money, a strap or tow rope is as easy to handle as chain and much much safer for the average user and under the stressfull, damning conditions of the moment . . . .
