Leesburg, Ohio
If you would consider a semi, you wouldn't be sorry. Cost and maneuverability are two big reasons. Seems hard to find a very good tandem straight truck for less than $25-30k. I know hopper trailers got really high last year, but are coming down now, and older road tractors are plentiful and cheap. Probably easier to put together a tractor-trailer that will haul 800-1000 bu. for less money than a 500 bu. straight tandem, and it won't take 40 acres to turn the semi. Semis are safer and alot more stable handling than an overloaded single axle farm grain truck.

For a 1000 acre or less operation, I'd look around for a single axle day cab and a short, 22 to 26' s/a hopper trailer. We have one we keep around just for field-to-bins and for dumping the grain cart into at the auger if we're doing a field next to a bin-site. It will turn around in an area you would have to back up in to turn a pickup truck. Ours is a mid-80's IH dt466, and mid 90's Jet 22' steel hopper. Probably buy a set like it for $15k, and you won't get much of a tandem for that around here.
