If he raised the steer, then he's already been exposed to all the e coli strains the steer had. Like if you're drinking raw milk from ONE cow, you've already got anything she's carrying, and vice versa. A whole lot different than drinking raw milk off a truck from several farms.

Now, if your grandpa ate raw hamburger from walmart, then he had an amazing immune system, probably from growing up drinking water from a spring and being very exposed to cattle. I think a fair bit of digestive illness comes from our luxurious varied diet. No other animal changes up their diet so often and as dramatically. We'd expect most animals to go off feed with diet changes. "Bachelor" cooking has consistency going for it.
