Subject: Re: P&K + StripTill

Aberdeen MS
The U of MN is conducting a "strip till N placement" for corn on corn. 08 is the second year of the research.

Using an Unverfurth 1 Tripper they did strips with fall application of Urea applied at 100 units and 130 units. One was placement after the knife to around the 8" depth (faint memory on the depth..could be 10) and the other placement was surface banding just in front of the knife... letting the knife incorporate it. Nutrisphere was also used I believe.

Results of year 1.

Check of no N applied was 96 bu/ac.

Both of the N placement/treatments gave yields ranging from 122 - 129. Statiscally, no benefit between the treatments.

Conclusion from first year trials was N was needed...... but the question is what amount?

That 25 - 30 bushels cost a pretty penny in terms on N costs.

Following best management practices for southwestern MN, .75 units per bushel is what is allowed for Nutrient Management plans.

Soil type, OM, and CEC will play a big part on what amount you can utilize efficiently and still maintain yield. As in real estate....location location location.

Edited to add: Application can and will also effect amounts that will give the maximum return. Weed and feed, starter, sidedress has in years past proven to give the best bang for the buck "here". But there is differences in fall app...spring app, side dress only... pick the combo's you can come up with really. But again...depends heavily on your soil and climatic conditions.
