Been lucky here too Brian. Not unusual for something to sit on the yard for the better part of a day, overnight, etc. with no oil in it. Try to pull the keys when doing the change but never can keep up to what everybody is doing.

On your o-ring problem- rather than using oil as a lubricant, use grease and install the o-ring before turning the filter on. It will stay in it's grove with the grease. This way you will know whether or not you got the old one removed as well.
