We're mostly all organic so cultivating just is what it is, but a friend that has a bunch of non-organic and organic claims to have done trials showing 3-4bu advantage to cultivating corn. Not sure what stage the corn was at, just what they have found on their soils.

Yes root pruning is a real thing. I've seen it ding yield very badly in a dry year. Obviously the bigger the plant the farther away you stay from it.

Green up would be from introducing O2 into the soil which would increase soil microbe activity, which then they release CO2 (because they breath like we do) and the corn plant is happy. A good stand of knee to waist high corn can really stifle air movement in the lower canopy and if water is adequate and there is no breeze the plant can use up a lot of CO2 pretty fast.
