Subject: Raising ones own meat?

Saskatchewan, big whitetail country!!!

OK, how many of you raise your own meat? Any one milk cows for personal use, have laying hens? Anyone raise weanling swine to eat? See, I grain farm, but we do have corrals and such, and have chickens for meat most years, and find the quality unbeatable, and the dollar savings can be there.

My 4 kids are between 1 and 6, and I always feel they need to be on a farm, not a machinery run grain producing factory devoid of animals, and so I am wondering what animals are the most efficient financially and the most fun to have around. We have no feed shortages. Up here north of the border, grain and hay is dirt cheap comparatively.

I just lately have a hankering to make the most of our land and facilities, and to try and save some cashola as well.
