Subject: Re: jd 1890 lubrication

thanks guys. yeah originally owned a 750 drill and did about 60000 ac with it and upgraded to 1890. first season did 6 to 8000 ac and had few problems but didn't take too much notice as was unaware there was problems. second season had major problems with press and closing wheel pivots and some depth wheel pivots were getting tight and had trouble taking grease. before third season machine was totally stripped down and cleaned of old dry grease etc. last season covered 16000 ac and by mid season all pivots- press wheeel closing wheel and depth shaft were seized. press and closing pivots were then let run dry like old 750 and freed themselves as they dried up. depth shafts would not take grease and became impossible to adjust. machine got updated with seals on press and pivot arms. have since traded that machine for new one. all updated with seals on press and closing arm pivots and these seem to be going ok. however problem with depth shaft has already arised after only 3000ac. the cap that goes over the tripple seal is no longer welded onto shaft so fine dust enters here and drys grease out. this seems stupid to have a tripple lip seal but leve a gap between the cap and shaft where dust can enter. it is extremely hard to get grease into the shaft as there is very little clearance between shaft and bushing so this makes it hard to purge old grease out. i just seem to spend more time under the machine than i do driving it. its gunna be a long season with 14000ac to go in the next two months. cheers
