Subject: RE: jd 1890 lubrication

Deere came out with a seal kit last Nov.  I don't have the seal numbers handy but they can look it up.  They give you a diagram to lathe down a shaft for making a driver that sets the correct depth.  The seals are all the same for the two on the seed firming/press wheel bracket and the two on the closing wheel bracket.  Likewise, outside bushings are the same all around.  Inside bushings are different for press and closing bracket.  I went ahead and replaced them all.  Would've been a lot less work to leave them in and just drive them a deeper for the seal.  They come out hard.  Inside the housing is a pretty big cavity that is full of hard grease and dirt that needs to come out.  Was probably $50 a row and two days to replace all bushings and add the seals.  I always got a chuckle that the book called for greasing once a season.  It doesn't take very many acres and that grease has no where to go.
