Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

Steve, how do the Chevy "hubs" work? Does the dis-engage really unhook the wheel from the u-joints in the axle or is it like the Dodge that still has the wheel joint turning whether the pickup is in 4WD or 2WD?

All the Dodge does, is unhook a slip joint in one of the front axles. Everything still turns, or maybe the drive shaft may not, but if it isn't turning then the diff spiders are. I dunno? the setup seems to hold up OK but I'm sure a guy pays for it with extra fuel use. A real lockout hub might make for better mileage?

Now, back in the days when the only way to make things not turn in the front axle was to buy and install a set of Warn locking hubs, then we had the discussion about whether running all summer long with the hubs turned out would be hard on u-joints and axle bearings because they sat there without turning and the road vibrations would conceivably pound flat spots in the needle, ball, and roller bearings. Some said that a guy should run with the hubs in for a day, every month or so and others claimed that it made no difference.
