Subject: Re: Pioneer Y beans

It is true Monsanto is really down playing Pioneer's AYT technology. The AYT-Technology enables Pioneer Soybean Breeders to use molecular markers to identify yield genes. Pioneer is the leader on this technology in soybeans.

Monsanto claimed they released their first variety in which marker assisted selection had been used in 2003.  That is 5 years after Pioneer did. Pioneer has a leading position for using AYT for yield in soybeans. Monsanto is sensitive to the new Y-series marketing campaign because it makes them look like they are behind in technology– a position they do not like to be in – however true it is!!

Monsanto is preparing to launch the RR2 gene in soybeans. The RR2 is the same gene as the RR1 gene; they just insert it in a different position in the genome. It is not a new technology. Monsanto is really pushing the RR2 gene as a new technology, but the truth is, it is the same technology.

Where they are getting a yield response, is from the seed treatments they apply to the RR2 soybeans. You will not be able to purchase RR2 soybeans, without seed treatments. The seed treatments are mainly responsible for the yield increases.
