West Michigan | Not all of us farm the flat IL ground like Ron. Why pay to have a sample every 2.5 acres when I can average 4-6 acres per sample and do better of job by making zones. On our variable soil grids do not work as well as zones drawn off from years of yield maps. This is a fact on our farm. Combined a field today that had anywhere from 0-225 bu corn. The line from 200 to 20 is about 20 feet. If that grid that you draw randomly doesn't follow that 20 foot line it is not going to do a good job. Fert removal is not the same on 200 vs 20, not even close. Good thing for adjustable deck plates on the corn head. It is a here thing I guess. Our soil types are digital here and yes they are off!!!!! Thats why we have many years of yield maps to draw lines from. Can't just draw them from one or two years need a wet year or two, a few average years and some dry years.
