There are city buses running on CNG in various cities around the country to help cut down smog. As mentioned the big problem is storage. The stuff has to stored at very high pressure and it is not very dense. I am guessing that storing the same energy that is in 100 gallons of diesel would be a huge tank. The CNG buses put the fuel storage tanks on top of the bus. This also helps if they get a leak, as NG is lighter than air and goes up.
Personally, I think that CNG sounds just plain dangerous, especially if every Tom, Dick and Harry is fueling rigs and transferring it around the country.
