Subject: Re: Questions about Bale spears.....one design better than another?

Central / West Texas
The main way they get broke around here is when loading bales out of a pile that are back to back. Long rows of them may 100 or so. The driver drives tight up to the bale. spins the tires a bit for good measure and then attempts to lift the ale off the ground, along with a few other behind it do to the drag of one bale against the next. Now you are trying to lift 3000lbs instead of 1500lbs. Can you read the writtng on the wall. That and driving along with spear pointed towards ground and then making contact with the ground while in motion. Its not a root plow! all our spears have one long (48") or so top spear and two short spears about 1' below it and to either side. The spears we have been buying now are tempered and are square in the middle and round on the loader and business end. If you dont have them as you pick up the bale it will role to its center of gravity. Not a big deal if you are just taking it to feed the cows but if you are trying to load it on a semi thats a differtn story. They dont stack worth a darn when the egg shapes heads down.
