I had the same question/thought when I saw the JD row guidance system a couple of days ago. I'm sure JD has it figured out, but our HeadSight fingers were spring loaded so you could grab the arms & straighten them completely to the front. Of course the arm material itself is also somewhat flexible. It's kind of like May-Wes type plastic (just used as an example, I don't know what they use...).

I was surprised that the JD arms were metal & non-flexible to the front.

No, we don't back up w/the planter in the ground, but we've sometimes backed up the combine w/the head NOT completely raised up. Probably this doesn't happen to everyone.

Again, I'm sure JD ran across those problems & addressed them.
